Questions
E1 Understand the principles of sustainable development and apply them in work
Demonstration of candidate’s awareness of the considerations taken in their project/s in respect of sustainable development.
This could include an ability to operate and act responsibly, taking account of the need to progress environmental, social and economic outcomes simultaneously

General considerations for a project
Can you tell me what sustainability considerations were incorporated into the design at xxxxxx?

Do you know what the Three Pillars of Sustainability are?
Social, economic and environment

How do you see things like the use of BIM and effective document management and CAD systems contributing to sustainability?
Collaboration, therefore streamlining efficiency, programme savings, effective as-built information, paperless, accuracy so fewer things to adjust on site
Drainage SuDS
Something appropriate to candidate's submission on types of features, design, why use what type where?

E2 Complete tasks with consideration for their environmental impact
Understanding of what environmental impacts the project may have and how to mitigate them.

Overall impacts on a project
What are the environmental and ecological considerations on a major infrastructure scheme/type of scheme candidate involved in? How might these have an impact on cost and programme?
Noise, dust, light, bird nesting, protected species, landscaping, archaeology, control of waste. Describe some methods for protection of animals – bats, dormice, badgers. Wildlife corridors.
Noise
Do you know basically how a noise barrier is designed and what kind of data informs the design? How might this impact the project programme?
Noise levels, height of the receiver, distance from source of noise. Aim to avoid having to install insulation in properties. Noise monitoring in various locations. Takes time to collect and evaluate data.

What kind of materials can be used for a noise barrier? What might affect the choice?
Artificial or natural, ie a bund. Bund can be more environmentally friendly and pleasing to look at but are most cost effective if there is surplus material on site. Balance costs – constructing timber barriers vs importing bund material. Use of varying heights of barrier depending on location of receiver.
