Strictly days gone by

Updated: Apr 3, 2021

They will have been well known to our Strictly judges of today. True legends, they are still held in the highest esteem by those who know and love ballroom dancing.

Bill and Bobbie Irvine.

I found this picture when I was clearing out ready for packing up the household. Ballroom dancing icons, they were reigning world champions throughout the 1960s, eventually being appointed MBE for their contribution to the world of dance.

My parents met them several times and I know they were guest adjudicators at the national ballroom championships in Zimbabwe, probably in the late 60s or early 70s – so the country would’ve still been known as Rhodesia at that time. Bobbie Irvine was born in South Africa so their visit to Zimbabwe would've been like a return home to her.
